3093 (DTC 3312) - ECU

Case IH 3093 (DTC 3312) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): Compared camshaft and crankshaft speed sensor values are not plausible

Issue description

The Engine Control Module is detecting that the timing synchronization or phase relationship between the camshaft speed sensor and the crankshaft speed sensor is out of the acceptable limits. This indicates a loss of phase synchronization, meaning the engine computer cannot accurately determine the engine's position for proper fuel injection timing.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Farmall Series
  • Case IH JX Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the tractor battery power supply has been connected to an external power supply (such as a jump box or charger). Disconnect it and test the system for normal operation, as voltage irregularities can cause false sensor readings.

  2. Check the ECU for related active speed sensor faults (3091, 3090, 3089, 3088). If any of these specific sensor faults are active, you must diagnose and repair them first before evaluating fault 3093.

Repair steps

  1. Inspect Wiring and Connectors

Locate both the camshaft speed sensor and the crankshaft speed sensor on the engine block. Inspect the pigtail wiring harnesses and connectors for damage, corrosion, or moisture intrusion.

  2. Check Sensor Gap/Mounting

Ensure the sensors are securely mounted. The magnetic pickup design requires a specific gap between the sensor tip and the gear teeth (usually around 0.5-2mm depending on the specific FPT engine variant). Verify the mounting surface is clean and free of debris.

  3. Test/Replace Sensors

If no wiring issues are found and related codes (3088-3091) point to a specific sensor failure, replace the faulty sensor. The sensors are direct-replacement magnetic pickups with no moving parts.

  4. Clear Codes and Test

After replacing the sensor(s), clear the fault codes from the ECM and run the engine to verify that synchronization is restored and the code does not return.
