Case IH 3093 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Offset Between Camshaft and Crankshaft - Outside Boundaries
Issue description
The timing signals generated by the camshaft speed/position sensor and the crankshaft speed/position sensor are out of sync or implausible when compared to each other.

Check the cause
Evaluate raw signals from both the camshaft and crankshaft sensors using a diagnostic scan tool or oscilloscope while cranking or running the engine to look for signal dropouts, erratic readings, or electrical interference.
Inspect the wiring harnesses leading to both sensors for short circuits to ground, open circuits, chafing, or corrosion at the connector pins.
Verify that both sensors are properly seated, securely fastened, and have the correct air gap, as a loose sensor can cause erratic readings.
Inspect the tone rings/gears on the camshaft and crankshaft for missing teeth, damage, or excessive debris buildup.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the Sensors
Locate the crankshaft speed sensor (typically positioned near the engine flywheel casing or primary timing gear housing) and the camshaft speed sensor (located near the cylinder head or camshaft gear).
Clean the Area
Clean the area around the sensors to prevent dirt from entering the engine block when the sensors are removed.
Remove and Inspect
Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connectors. Remove the mounting bolts and pull the sensors out. Inspect the magnetic tips of the sensors for heavy metal shavings or sludge, which can distort the signal.
Replace Faulty Sensor(s)
If diagnostics pointed to a specific sensor failing (or if the sensor housing is physically damaged/cracked), install the new replacement sensor.
Reinstall
Push the new sensor firmly into the mounting bore until it sits flush. Install the retaining bolt and torque to OEM specifications.
Reconnect
Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring the weather-tight seal clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes and Test
Connect a diagnostic tool, clear the inactive 3093 / 3312 fault codes, and start the engine. Monitor the synchronization status of the cam and crank sensors to ensure the repair was successful. (Note: If the code immediately returns with new sensors and good wiring, the engine may have jumped mechanical timing, requiring a teardown to inspect the timing gears/chain).
