Case IH 3093 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Offset Between Camshaft And Crankshaft Speed Sensors

Issue description

Timing signals generated by the camshaft speed sensor and the crankshaft speed sensor are out of sync or outside of the acceptable programmed boundaries. The engine controller relies on these two sensors to determine the exact position and speed of the engine for proper fuel injection timing.

Check the cause

  1. Evaluate raw signals from both the camshaft and crankshaft speed sensors using a diagnostic service tool while cranking or running.

  2. Check the wiring harnesses and connectors for both sensors for short circuits to ground, open circuits, corrosion, or moisture.

  3. Verify that both sensors are physically installed correctly, ensuring the gap between the sensor tip and the signal wheel teeth is within factory specifications (typically 0.5–2mm).

  4. Check the correct positions and physical condition of the camshaft signal wheel and the engine crankshaft signal wheel.

Repair steps

  1. Inspect Connections

    Locate the camshaft and crankshaft speed sensors on the engine block. Disconnect the pigtails and inspect the pins for corrosion or damage. Reconnect securely.

  2. Test Sensors

    If the wiring is intact but the raw signal from one of the sensors is erratic or missing on your diagnostic tool, remove the suspect sensor.

  3. Inspect Signal Wheels

    With the sensor removed, use a borescope or flashlight to inspect the teeth of the camshaft or crankshaft signal wheel inside the engine. Look for chipped teeth, debris, or signs that the wheel has slipped out of its timed position.

  4. Replace Defective Sensor

    If the signal wheels are intact and wiring is good, the magnetic pickup inside the sensor has likely failed. Install a new sensor, ensuring the mounting surface is completely clean so the sensor sits flush and maintains the correct air gap.

  5. Clear and Verify

    Clear the fault code via the ECM and run the engine to verify that the timing offset is resolved and the code does not return.
