3095

Case IH 3095 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC: Operating with camshaft sensor only - backup mode

Issue description

The engine control system has lost the signal from the crankshaft position sensor. Because the primary engine speed and position data is missing, the system enters a 'backup mode' (or limp mode) where it relies entirely on the camshaft position sensor to maintain engine operation and timing.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • Maxxum series (100, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 140)
  • Puma series (165, 180, 195, 210)
  • Farmall series (85C, 95C, 105C, 115C, 100N, 110N, etc.)
  • JX series (JX1080U, JX1090U, JX1100U)
  • 580 ST
  • 590 ST
  • 1150M
  • 2050M
  • 570NXT

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the crankshaft position sensor for any open circuits, short circuits to ground, or short circuits to power.

  2. Check the physical installation of the crankshaft sensor to ensure it is seated properly and the gap is correct.

  3. Evaluate the raw signals of the crankshaft sensor using a diagnostic tool to see if any data is being transmitted.

  4. Check for any physical damage or debris on the sensor tip or the tone wheel/flywheel.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the crankshaft position sensor on the engine block.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion or damage.

  3. Test the wiring harness between the sensor connector and the Engine ECM for continuity and shorts.

Repair the wiring if faults are found.

  4. If the wiring is intact, remove the mounting bolt and pull the defective crankshaft position sensor from the engine block.

  5. Install the new OEM crankshaft position sensor and secure it.

  6. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the active 3095 fault code from the Engine ECM.

  8. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and the machine is no longer operating in backup mode.
