Case IH 3098 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-TE (When Active)

Communication failure on the tractor's Controller Area Network (CAN) bus where the Engine Control Module (ECM) has stopped receiving the TSC1-TE (Torque Speed Control 1 - Transmission/Engine) message.

   Check for accompanying codes (such as 3096 or 3097) which indicate a central wiring or bus issue rather than a single module failure.

   Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring harness (yellow and green twisted pairs) between the Engine ECU and the Transmission/Vehicle ECU for chafed, cut, or corroded wires.

   Test terminating resistors with the battery disconnected by measuring resistance across CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port or ECU connector (should read approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a faulty resistor or open circuit).

   Inspect connectors at the Engine ECU and TCU for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Harness Repair

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short circuit, open circuit, or physical damage to the CAN bus wiring harness, repair the damaged section using proper soldering and heat-shrink techniques, or replace the affected harness section.

   Clean Connections

   Disconnect the Engine ECU and TCU connectors. Spray them with a high-quality electrical contact cleaner, ensure they are completely dry, and firmly reconnect them, ensuring the locking mechanisms click into place.

   Replace Terminating Resistors

   If the CAN bus resistance was out of spec (e.g., 120 ohms or open), locate and replace the faulty CAN bus termination module/resistor.

   Module Replacement/Reflash

   If the wiring, connectors, and resistors all test perfectly, the fault may lie within the software or hardware of the ECU itself. A dealer may need to reflash the software using the Electronic Service Tool (EST). If hardware has failed, replace the faulty ECU.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery, clear the inactive fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and test drive the tractor (engaging the transmission and PTO) to verify the code does not return.
