Case IH 3100 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-AE (When Active)

   Check for accompanying CAN bus-related fault codes (such as 3096 or 3097) which indicate a broader network failure

   Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the ECM to the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) or Transmission Control Unit (TCU) for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or melted insulation

   Disconnect the ECM and VCM connectors and inspect the pins for corrosion, dirt, moisture, or bent terminals. Ensure the connectors are fully seated and locked

   Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test with the machine off and the battery disconnected by measuring the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port (should read approximately 60 ohms)

   Test the CAN High and CAN Low circuits for continuity from end to end, and ensure neither circuit is shorted to ground or to battery voltage

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Isolate the Fault

   Based on the resistance and continuity tests, isolate the section of the CAN bus that is open or shorted. If the resistance was 120 ohms, locate and replace the failed or missing CAN terminating resistor.

   Repair or Replace Wiring

   If a break or short is found in the wiring harness, either repair the damaged section using OEM-approved splicing techniques (twisted pair wiring must be maintained for CAN lines) or replace the affected harness section entirely.

   Clean and Reconnect

   Clean any corroded connector pins with electrical contact cleaner. Apply a light coat of dielectric grease to the connector seals (avoiding the pins directly if it interferes with low-voltage signals) and securely reconnect all modules.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery. Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the Case IH EST or Jaltest) to clear the inactive fault codes. Start the machine and operate it under load to verify that the TSC1-AE communication is restored and code 3100 does not return.
