Case IH 3101 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-AE (When Inactive)
Issue description
Indicates a communication failure on the machine's Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The engine controller expects to receive a specific data packet known as the TSC1-AE (Torque Speed Control) message from another module on the network. When this message is not received within the programmed time window while the function is in an inactive state, the system logs a timeout error.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying CAN bus fault codes (such as 3096 or 3097) to determine if the entire network is down rather than just a single missing message
Verify battery voltage is sufficient and the Engine ECU is receiving proper power and ground, as low voltage can cause modules to temporarily drop off the CAN bus
Perform a CAN bus resistance test with the machine powered off and battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms across CAN High and CAN Low; 120 ohms indicates an open circuit or missing terminating resistor, near 0 ohms indicates a short circuit)
Visually inspect the wiring harnesses and connectors at the Engine ECU for corrosion, moisture, chafing, or pushed-out pins
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the key switch and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during testing.
Access the Engine ECU
Locate the Engine ECU and disconnect the main harness connectors.
Inspect and Clean
Inspect the pins on both the ECU and the harness side for corrosion, fretting, or poor pin tension. Clean the contacts with an approved electrical contact cleaner.
Trace the CAN Wiring
Using a multimeter, perform continuity checks on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the Engine ECU and the rest of the vehicle's CAN backbone.
Repair Wiring
Repair any broken wires, worn insulation causing a short to ground/power, or replace damaged connector pins.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect all modules and the battery. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault code 3101.
Test Run
Start the engine and operate the machine to ensure CAN communication is fully restored and the fault code does not return.
