Case IH 3102 – Engine ECU (EDC7 / EDC7UC31): Fuel rail pressure sensor voltage is lower than expected

Issue description

The sensor monitoring the high-pressure fuel rail is sending a voltage signal to the controller that falls below the acceptable minimum threshold. This condition typically points to a sensor failure, a wiring issue (such as a short to ground or an open circuit), or a severe drop in actual fuel pressure reaching the rail.

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active faults, such as 3810 or 3111, and diagnose those first before returning to 3102.

  2. Verify that the machine's battery power supply has not been connected to an external power supply (like a jump box or external charger); disconnect if present and retest.

  3. Inspect the fuel rail pressure sensor mounting to ensure it is properly mounted and the electrical connector is fully seated and free of corrosion.

  4. Test low-pressure fuel supply vacuum between the inlet of the low-pressure pump and the fuel tank (should not exceed 5 inches of Hg / 127 mm).

  5. Test fuel supply pressure between the fuel filter and the inlet to the high-pressure pump (must be a minimum of 5 bar / 72 psi with the engine loaded or unloaded).

Repair steps

  1. Visual & Electrical Inspection

    Inspect the wiring harness leading to the fuel rail pressure sensor. Look for chafing, bare wires, or a short to ground. Use a multimeter to verify the 5V reference signal and ground from the EDC7 controller. Repair the harness if damaged.

  2. Filter Maintenance

    If the low-pressure supply test fails, replace the primary and secondary fuel filters/water separators and re-test the supply pressure.

  3. Sensor Replacement

    If the wiring is intact and the low-pressure fuel supply is at or above 5 bar (72 psi), the fuel rail pressure sensor has likely failed internally and must be replaced.

  4. System Bleed & Clear Codes

    After replacing the sensor or filters, prime the fuel system. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes and reset the ECU data if necessary.

  5. Test Run

    Start the engine and monitor the actual vs. desired fuel rail pressure via the diagnostic tool to ensure the new sensor is reading correctly under load.
