Case IH 3103 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Physical Range low for Charged Air cooler down stream sensor
Issue description
The sensor's raw signal voltage has fallen below the minimum acceptable physical threshold (Signal Range Check Low). This typically indicates an electrical fault such as a short circuit to ground, a broken wire/open load in the sensor harness, or an internally failed sensor.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the charged air cooler downstream sensor for physical damage, corrosion, or disconnected pins
Test the sensor circuit for a short circuit to ground or an open load (broken wire)
Check the sensor's raw voltage output using a diagnostic scan tool (look for voltage dropping below the minimum threshold, e.g., 318mV)
Ensure ambient conditions aren't causing an extreme reading (e.g., extremely cold ambient temperatures combined with a faulty block heater)
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the charged air cooler downstream temperature sensor. It is mounted on the intake piping between the charge air cooler (intercooler) outlet and the engine intake manifold.
Disconnect and Inspect
Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor. Clean the contacts and verify there is no moisture or corrosion.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground or broken wire in the harness, repair the affected section of the wiring harness.
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring is intact, the sensor itself has failed internally. Unscrew the faulty sensor from the charge air piping and install the replacement sensor.
Reassembly
Reconnect the sensor harness and reconnect the battery ground.
Clear Codes
Connect a diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH EST tool) to clear the inactive 3103 fault code from the Engine ECU. Run the engine to verify the code does not return and that the sensor reads a plausible temperature.
