Case IH 3104 (F-5571-11) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel pressure relief valve is open

The mechanical Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) is designed to open and bleed off pressure into the return line if excessive rail pressure occurs. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the rail pressure sensor and counts radical reductions in rail pressure. If the ECU detects that the valve has been forced open to relieve pressure, it logs this fault code.

   Verify that the tractor's battery has not been connected to an external power supply (like a jump box or charger). Disconnect if present and test for normal operation, as voltage irregularities can trigger false sensor readings.

   Check and replace the pre-filter and primary fuel filters. Fuel starvation or restrictions can cause pressure fluctuations.

   Measure resistance and voltage across the rail pressure sensor pins using the 380040185 harness diagnostic/repair kit to rule out electrical anomalies.

   Look for accompanying codes (e.g., 3107/3108 for the fuel metering unit, or 3110/3111 for rail pressure sensor offsets). A shorted metering unit may cause the over-pressure situation forcing the relief valve open.

   Observe safety warnings

   WARNING: Never open the high-pressure fuel system or loosen any fittings while the engine is running. High-pressure fuel spray can cause severe injury or death.

   Depressurize system

   Turn off the engine and allow the system to depressurize and cool completely.

   Clean area

   Clean the area around the fuel rail thoroughly. Extreme cleanliness is required, as microscopic contamination can destroy common rail components.

   Locate valve

   Locate the fuel pressure relief valve on the fuel rail.

   Disconnect return line

   Disconnect the fuel return line attached to the relief valve.

   Remove valve

   Unthread and remove the faulty pressure relief valve from the fuel rail.

   Install new valve

   Install the new pressure relief valve and torque it to the manufacturer's specification (refer to your specific engine's service manual).

   Reconnect return line

   Reconnect the fuel return line.

   Replace filters and prime

   Replace the fuel filters and prime the fuel system using fresh, filtered fuel. (If contamination caused the failure, flush the entire fuel system to prevent repeat failures).

    Clear fault codes

    Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and clear the fault codes.

    Test operation

    Start the engine and check for leaks and proper operation.
