Case IH 3106 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Rail Pressure Relief Valve - Did Not Open After Pressure Shock

The mechanical Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) on the fuel rail is stuck closed, fails to open during the requested pressure shock, or has exceeded its operational lifespan.

   Check for accompanying codes such as 3104 (PRV Open), 3105 (Pressure Shock Requested), or 3110/3111/3112 (Rail Pressure Sensor out of range) to rule out false pressure data

   Use a diagnostic service tool to monitor Actual vs. Desired fuel rail pressure while the engine is running

   Inspect the fuel filters for metal shavings or severe contamination, which often causes the valve to stick closed

   Inspect the high-pressure pump metering unit and rail pressure sensor harnesses to ensure they are intact and not shorting to ground or battery

   Preparation

   Turn off the machine, disconnect the battery, and allow the engine to cool completely to ensure fuel pressure naturally bleeds down.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the fuel rail and the area around the pressure relief valve to prevent microscopic dirt from entering the open fuel system.

   Remove the Return Line

   Disconnect the fuel return line attached to the top of the pressure relief valve.

   Remove the Valve

   Using the appropriate wrench, carefully unscrew the faulty pressure relief valve from the common fuel rail.

   Install the New Valve

   Thread the new PRV into the fuel rail. Torque it strictly to the OEM specifications found in your specific engine's service manual (over-tightening can distort the rail or valve).

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the fuel return line.

   Prime the System

   Turn the key to the ON position to allow the lift pump to prime the system, or use the manual primer pump to bleed air from the fuel lines.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Connect your diagnostic tool, clear the 3106 fault code, start the engine, and check for leaks. Monitor the rail pressure to ensure it is regulating correctly.
