Case IH 3106 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ENG): Rail Pressure Relief Valve - pressure relief valve reached maximum allowed opening count

The Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) has reached its maximum programmed lifetime limit of opening cycles, indicating that the valve is likely fatigued, leaking, or that there is an underlying fuel pressure regulation issue.

   Check for associated fuel system fault codes (such as 3107, 3108, 3110, or 3112) related to metering unit short circuits or rail pressure sensor faults. Diagnose these first, as they may be causing the over-pressure condition.

   Perform a leak-down test by disconnecting the pressure relief valve return line and capping it with a blanking cap. Install a test gauge and hose assembly, then run the engine. No fuel should come out of the relief valve; if it leaks, the PRV is weak or has failed open.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the fuel rail and surrounding area. Installation requires extreme cleanliness, as even microscopic contamination can destroy common rail components.

   Replace the Valve

   Remove the faulty pressure relief valve from the fuel rail and install the new replacement valve.

   Reset the ECU Counter

   Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine. You must use the EST to perform the 'PRV counter reset' procedure. If this is not done, the ECU will continue to restrict engine performance.

   Test the Machine

   Return the machine to service and verify that the code clears.

   Software Check

   If the fault remains active after replacing the valve and resetting the counter, check the ECU (specifically A-095) for the appropriate software version and re-flash the controller if necessary.
