Case IH 3111 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Rail pressure sensor monitoring - signal above range maximum
Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the fuel rail high-pressure sensor that exceeds the maximum allowable threshold. This is typically caused by a short circuit to a power source (battery voltage), an open ground circuit in the wiring harness, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Check the fuel rail pressure sensor connector to ensure it is fully mated. Look for bent pins, pushed-out pins, or corrosion inside the connector.
Wiring Harness Check: Inspect the wiring harness between the rail pressure sensor and the ECM. Test for a short circuit to an external power source (battery) or an open circuit/broken wire.
Supply Voltage Test: Verify that the ECM is supplying the correct reference voltage (typically 5V or 12V depending on the specific engine sensor circuit) to the sensor.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Harness Repair (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short or break in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the harness segment.
Sensor Replacement
If the wiring and connector are in good condition, the fault is internal to the sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel rail pressure sensor.
Remove the Sensor
Carefully unscrew the faulty pressure sensor from the high-pressure fuel rail. (Caution: Ensure the engine has been off long enough for the high-pressure fuel system to depressurize before loosening the sensor).
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new OEM fuel rail pressure sensor into the rail and torque it to the manufacturer's exact specifications to prevent fuel leaks.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.
Clear Codes
Use a diagnostic tool (such as the Case IH EST) to clear the inactive 3111 fault code. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that the machine operates normally.
