Case IH 3116 – VCM (Vehicle Control Module) / Engine ECU: Boost Pressure Sensor (downstream) voltage is lower than expected

Issue description

The sensor monitoring the charge air (boost) pressure downstream of the turbocharger or charge air cooler is sending a voltage signal to the controller that is below the minimum acceptable threshold, typically indicating an electrical circuit fault such as a short to ground, an open circuit, or an internally shorted sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the downstream boost pressure sensor for physical damage, corrosion, or loose/pushed-back pins.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and turn the key to the ON position to verify that the VCM/ECU is supplying the correct 5V reference voltage and a solid ground to the sensor connector.

  3. Test the signal wire between the sensor connector and the VCM for continuity, checking for a short to ground or an open circuit.

  4. Inspect the charge air cooler and intake piping for massive leaks or disconnected hoses that could cause implausibly low readings.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the downstream boost pressure sensor, which is typically mounted on the intake manifold or the charge air cooler piping.

  3. Disconnect and Inspect

    Unplug the sensor harness. If the wiring harness failed the diagnostic checks (e.g., a short to ground was found), repair the damaged section of the harness or replace the pigtail connector.

  4. Replace the Sensor

    If the wiring tests good (5V reference and ground are present, and the signal wire is intact), the sensor itself has failed internally. Unbolt/unscrew the old sensor and install the replacement.

  5. Reassemble

    Plug the wiring harness back into the new sensor and reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Connect a diagnostic tool (such as Case EST or Jaltest) to clear the inactive 3116 fault code. Start the engine and run it under load to verify that the boost pressure reads correctly and the code does not return.
