Case IH 3117 (517801.13) - DEC – Engine ECU (Engine Control Module) / DEC (Driveline/Engine Controller): PTO Twist Sensor - Out of Range

The signal from the PTO twist sensor is falling outside of the expected or plausible voltage/resistance range. The PTO twist sensor measures the torque or 'twist' load on the live power shaft in the transmission to detect when the PTO is under load so it can engage the engine's power boost feature.

   Locate the PTO twist sensor on the right side of the rear axle housing, near the right hydraulic cylinder

   Inspect the 3-pin connector (often labeled X-300 or 262) and the harness for corrosion, backed-out pins, or physical damage

   Check the wiring for shorts or open circuits, as high resistance can cause an out-of-range code

   Verify the sensor is not physically damaged and is correctly seated in the housing

   Check the calibration status of the sensor, as lost calibration can sometimes trigger an out-of-range code

   Repair Wiring

   If any damage is found in the harness or the 3-pin connector, splice in a new connector pigtail and clear the codes.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring tests good (proper reference voltage and ground are present), the internal potentiometer/sensor has likely failed. Remove the old PTO twist sensor from the rear axle housing and install the new one.

   Perform PTO Twist Sensor Calibration

   After replacing the sensor, it must be calibrated using the tractor's diagnostic display. Ensure the PTO is turned OFF (starting the PTO during calibration will abort the process and throw code U55). Enter the transmission/PTO calibration mode on the tractor's display. Cycle through the menus until the display shows 'Pt' (PTO twist calibration). Press and hold the downshift button to calibrate the sensor. When successfully calibrated, the display will alternate between 'Pt' and the new calibration value.
