Case IH 3117 – Engine ECU: PTO Twist Sensor - Out of Range

The PTO twist sensor measures the twist/torque on the rear PTO shaft to ensure it operates at the correct speeds and loads. This code sets when the signal voltage or frequency from the sensor falls outside the expected operational parameters. It can also be triggered during startup if the ECU power failed while the engine was running, or if the engine shutdown process was incorrect. When active, the engine will typically derate to 1800 RPM to protect the driveline.

   Verify shutdown procedure: clear the code and perform a proper key-cycle to see if the code returns, as improper shutdown or ECU power failure can trigger this code on startup.

   Check sensor supply voltage: look for related codes 3118 (High) or 3119 (Low) which indicate a broader harness or ECU power issue rather than a failed sensor.

   Inspect the wiring harness: locate the 3-pin connector at the PTO twist sensor (X-300 or X-262) and inspect for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or wire chafing.

   Check for shorts or opens: ensure the wiring is not shorted to ground (code 3122) or open (code 3121).

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and allow the system to power down completely.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the PTO twist sensor on the rear PTO driveline housing.

   Disconnect the Harness

   Unplug the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

   Test the Circuit

   Using a multimeter, verify that the 12V reference voltage and ground are present at the harness connector with the key in the ON position.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring tests good, remove the retaining fastener(s) securing the PTO twist sensor and pull the sensor from the housing. Install the new sensor and torque to OEM specifications.

   Replace the Connector

   If the connector is corroded or damaged, splice in a new 3-pin pigtail connector.

   Calibrate the Sensor

   After replacing the sensor, you must perform the PTO twist sensor calibration procedure via the tractor's display monitor. Failure to calibrate the new sensor will result in fault code 3123 (PTO Twist Sensor - Not Calibrated).

   Clear Codes

   Clear all inactive fault codes and test-run the PTO to verify the repair.
