3121 - UCM

Case IH 3121 - UCM – Engine Control Module (ECM / ENG): PTO Twist Sensor - Open Circuit

Issue description

The control module is unable to detect a continuous electrical path through the PTO twist sensor circuit. This indicates that the signal wire is broken, disconnected, or the sensor's internal circuitry has failed open.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Magnum Series 180, 190, 210, 225, and 235-340 (Series 4)
  • Puma Series
  • Maxxum Series 100, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 140
  • MXM Series 120, 130, 140, 155, 175, 190
  • Farmall 40, 45, 50 (Cab and CVT models)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the PTO twist sensor on the transmission/PTO housing for severed wires, chafing, or a disconnected plug.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins on both the sensor side and the harness side for pushed-out pins, heavy corrosion, or moisture ingress.

  3. Using a multimeter, check the continuity of the wiring harness from the sensor connector back to the ECM to rule out a broken wire in the loom.

  4. Measure the resistance across the pins of the PTO twist sensor itself. If it reads out of limits (OL) or infinite resistance, the sensor has failed internally and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the PTO twist sensor on the PTO/transmission housing.

  3. Remove the Sensor

Disconnect the electrical harness. Unthread the sensor from the housing. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of fluid may leak depending on the fluid level and sensor location.

  4. Replace the Seal

Remove the old copper sealing washer. Clean the mating surface on the housing.

  5. Install New Sensor

Thread the new PTO twist sensor into the housing using a new copper sealing washer. Tighten to OEM torque specifications.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor and reconnect the battery.

  7. Clear Codes

Use a diagnostic tool to clear the active 3121 fault code.

  8. Calibration

The new sensor must be calibrated. Enter the tractor's electronic calibration/H-Menu. Depending on the model, initiate the auto-calibration mode, which will sequentially calibrate the flywheel twist sensor, PTO twist sensor, and transmission clutches.
