Case IH 3122 – Engine Controller (ECM / Engine ECU): PTO Twist Sensor - Short circuit to Ground
Issue description
The signal voltage from the PTO twist sensor has dropped to zero (or below the minimum threshold) because the signal wire is making direct contact with the chassis ground, or the sensor has failed internally.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- Case IH Magnum Series (e.g., 210, 220, 235–340 Series 4)
- Case IH Steiger Series
- Case IH Puma Series (e.g., 180-260 CVX)
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the PTO twist sensor for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or bare wires touching the tractor frame.
Disconnect the PTO twist sensor and inspect the 3-pin connector for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.
With the sensor disconnected, use a multimeter to check the signal wire on the harness side for continuity to ground. If continuity exists, the harness is shorted. If it disappears, the sensor is internally shorted.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Sensor
Locate the PTO twist sensor on the driveline assembly.
Harness Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a shorted wire, splice and heat-shrink the damaged section of the harness, or replace the connector pigtail if the connector is melted/damaged.
Sensor Replacement
If the sensor is internally shorted, unplug the sensor, remove its mounting hardware, and extract the sensor from the driveline. Install the new sensor and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the 3-pin harness.
Reassemble and Power Up
Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position.
Calibration
A newly installed PTO twist sensor must be calibrated. Enter the tractor's H8/CCU calibration menu. Navigate to the PTO twist calibration screen (often indicated by 'Pt' on the display). Follow the specific on-screen prompts (which usually involve holding the downshift button until the calibration value is locked in).
Clear Codes
Clear the inactive 3122 fault code from the Engine ECM and test the PTO under load.
