Case IH 3123 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ENG): PTO Twist Sensor - Not Calibrated

The PTO twist sensor (also known as a torsion sensor) measures the torque/twist on the Power Take-Off shaft. This code triggers when the control module loses the sensor's calibration values, or if a previous calibration attempt failed, was aborted, or was performed incorrectly.

   Check for active interference: Ensure the PTO is completely turned OFF. If engaged or started during calibration, it will abort.

   Eliminate parasitic loads: Ensure the air conditioning is switched off and all electro-hydraulic applications/remotes are deselected.

   Check for related circuit codes: Look for active codes such as 3121 (Open Circuit) or 3122 (Short to Ground). If present, the sensor cannot be calibrated.

   Inspect the harness: Visually inspect the wiring harness and the 3-pin connector at the PTO twist sensor (left side of transmission housing) for corrosion, moisture, or physical damage.

   Prepare the Tractor

   Park on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and ensure the engine is running at the specified idle speed. Turn off the AC, hydraulic remotes, and ensure the PTO switch is OFF.

   Access the Calibration Menu

   Enter the tractor's electronic instrument cluster (H-Menu) or connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

   Run the Calibration

   Select the PTO Twist Sensor Calibration procedure. Follow the on-screen prompts to initiate the sequence.

   Monitor for Sub-Codes

   If the calibration aborts, note any sub-codes. For example, code U70 indicates the calibration value was too high or too low, meaning the sensor is likely damaged or incorrectly installed.

   Replace the Sensor (If Necessary)

   If the sensor fails calibration repeatedly, or has an active open/short circuit that cannot be fixed by repairing the harness, replace the PTO twist sensor.

   Re-calibrate

   After installing a new sensor, you must perform the calibration procedure again to clear code 3123.
