Case IH 3124 – Engine Controller (ENG) / Engine ECU: Hand Throttle - Channel 2 Signal Above Range Maximum
Issue description
Sets when the signal voltage from Channel 2 of the hand throttle potentiometer exceeds the maximum allowable threshold (typically above 4.5V on a 5V reference circuit). This condition is usually caused by a short to power (5V or 12V) on the signal wire, an open ground circuit, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.
Applies to these machines
11 machines- Magnum 235
- Magnum 245
- Magnum 275
- Magnum 310
- Magnum 340 (Series 4)
- Puma 165
- Puma 180
- Puma 195
- Puma 210
- Puma 225 CVX
- Steiger Series
Check the cause
Visually inspect the hand throttle assembly wiring harness and connector for pinched wires, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Perform a ground circuit test using a multimeter to verify continuity to ground on the potentiometer's ground pin (an open ground is a highly common cause for a Signal Above Range Max code).
Check the Channel 2 signal wire for a short to a 5V or 12V power source.
Perform a potentiometer sweep test by back-probing the sensor and monitoring voltage while moving the throttle lever. If voltage spikes out of range or reads a constant high voltage, the potentiometer is internally shorted.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the ignition, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Throttle Assembly
Remove the trim panels on the right-hand fender console or armrest (depending on cab configuration) to expose the hand throttle lever mechanism.
Disconnect the Sensor
Unplug the electrical connector from the hand throttle potentiometer.
Remove the Faulty Component
Remove the retaining hardware (often M4 x 12mm screws) holding the potentiometer or the throttle grip assembly in place.
Install the New Part
Seat the new potentiometer. If your model utilizes an O-ring seal for the sensor (e.g., Magnum 310), ensure the new O-ring is lubricated and seated properly before tightening the screws.
Reassembly
Reconnect the wiring harness and reinstall the armrest/console trim panels.
Recalibration
Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position. Clear the inactive 3124 fault code using the tractor's display monitor or a diagnostic tool. Perform a Hand Throttle Calibration via the tractor's display menu so the ECU can learn the new potentiometer's minimum and maximum voltage values.
