Case IH 3126 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Hand Throttle - Channel 1 Signal Above Range Max
Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the primary circuit (Channel 1) of the hand throttle position potentiometer that exceeds the maximum allowable threshold (typically near 5.0 volts on a 5V reference circuit). This is generally caused by a short to power, an open ground circuit, or an internal failure of the potentiometer.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Farmall
- Case IH Magnum Series (235, 260, 290, 315, 340 - Series 4)
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH MXM Series (MXM175, MXM190)
Check the cause
Access the hand throttle assembly in the right-hand armrest/console and visually inspect the wiring harness and connector for chafed wires, loose pins, or corrosion.
With key on and engine off, disconnect the hand throttle potentiometer and verify that the sensor is receiving a steady 5V reference voltage from the controller.
Test the ground pin for continuity to a known good chassis ground (an open ground is a highly common cause for an 'Above Range Max' code).
Test the signal wire for a short to a 12V power source.
Perform a sensor sweep test by monitoring the hand throttle voltage via the tractor's diagnostic display or service tool; if the voltage is stuck at maximum regardless of the lever's physical position, the potentiometer has failed internally.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the tractor's battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Remove trim panels
Remove the retaining screws and trim panels on the right-hand armrest or side console to expose the hand throttle mechanism.
Disconnect connector
Disconnect the electrical connector from the hand throttle potentiometer.
Remove mounting hardware
Remove the mounting hardware (screws or retaining clips) securing the hand throttle lever/sensor assembly to the console bracket.
Replace part
Remove the faulty potentiometer or complete throttle assembly and install the replacement part.
Reconnect harness
Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks securely into place.
Reassemble console
Reassemble the armrest console and trim panels.
Reconnect battery
Reconnect the battery.
Clear fault code
Turn the key on and use the tractor's diagnostic menu or an electronic service tool (EST) to clear the inactive 3126 fault code.
Calibrate hand throttle
Depending on the specific tractor model, perform a hand throttle calibration routine via the instrument cluster or service tool so the ECU learns the new minimum (idle) and maximum (full throttle) voltage values.
