3128

Case IH 3128 – Engine Controller (ENG / Engine ECU): Hand Throttle - Channel Difference Error

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the voltage difference between Channel 1 and Channel 2 of the hand throttle exceeds the programmed allowable tolerance.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum series
  • Case IH Steiger series
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Maxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and the connector at the hand throttle (usually located in the right-hand armrest or side console) for pinched wires, chafing, or corrosion.

  2. Disconnect the hand throttle potentiometer and check the pins for damage, moisture, or loose fitment.

  3. Using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's onboard diagnostic display, monitor the live voltage readings for 'Hand Throttle Channel 1' and 'Hand Throttle Channel 2'. Slowly move the throttle from idle to full throttle. The voltages should scale smoothly without dropping out or spiking. If one channel drops out or the values diverge erratically, the potentiometer has failed.

  4. Test the signal, 5V reference, and ground wires from the throttle connector back to the Engine ECU for continuity, short-to-ground, and short-to-battery.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Throttle

Remove the plastic trim panels on the right-hand control console or armrest to expose the base of the hand throttle mechanism.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical harness connector from the hand throttle potentiometer.

  4. Remove the Assembly

Remove the retaining screws or bolts holding the hand throttle assembly or the standalone potentiometer to the console bracket.

  5. Install the New Part

Mount the new hand throttle potentiometer/assembly and secure it with the retaining hardware.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical harness back into the new sensor and reinstall the console trim panels.

  7. Calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on. Perform a hand throttle calibration procedure through the tractor's instrument cluster calibration menu (e.g., 'Hitch/Armrest Calibration') or via the CNH EST laptop software.

  8. Clear Codes

Clear the inactive 3128 fault code from the Engine ECU and test the throttle operation.
