Case IH 3129 – Engine ECU: Hand throttle - idle switch closed circuit

Issue description

This code indicates a conflict between the hand throttle's position sensor (potentiometer) and its idle validation switch. The control module detects that the idle switch is stuck in a 'closed circuit' state even when the throttle lever is moved away from the idle position.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Steiger 4WD Tractors

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the right-hand armrest/console to the Engine ECU for pinched wires, chafing against the seat suspension, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the hand throttle electrical connector and inspect the pins for pushed-out terminals, corrosion, or moisture intrusion.

  3. Perform a switch continuity test using a digital multimeter on the idle switch pins directly on the hand throttle assembly. The circuit should transition from closed to open when the lever is moved off the idle stop. If it remains closed, the assembly has failed internally.

  4. Perform a harness short test with the throttle disconnected. Check the harness-side idle switch signal wire for continuity to ground or to the 5V reference wire to rule out a short circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Assembly

Remove the trim panels and retaining screws on the right-hand armrest or side console to expose the underside of the hand throttle mechanism.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the electrical connector from the hand throttle potentiometer/switch assembly.

  4. Remove the Unit

Remove the mounting bolts or screws securing the hand throttle assembly to the console bracket and lift the unit out.

  5. Install the New Part

Seat the new hand throttle assembly into the console and secure it with the mounting hardware.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Route the wiring carefully so it will not be pinched by the console trim or seat movement.

  7. Reassemble

    Reinstall the armrest/console trim panels.

  8. Restore Power

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  9. Calibration

Turn the key on and use the tractor's instrument cluster (H-Menu) or the electronic service tool to perform a hand throttle calibration. This step is critical for the Engine ECU to learn the new minimum and maximum voltage values.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • Lever, Hand Throttle CL2E

    87277589

Replaces 84608314. Common on Magnum 245/275 models. Ensure you are ordering the electronic potentiometer version.

  • Hand Throttle Knob

    87277590

Often sold separately from the lever.

  • Hand Throttle Lever

    1340018C2

Common on older Case IH models like the 5100/5200 series.

  • Hand Throttle Lever Assembly / Hand Throttle Potentiometer

Generic part name. Verify exact part number using the tractor's PIN/Serial Number.
