Case IH 3134 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Cold Start Lamp - Short circuit to Battery

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) detects unexpected battery voltage (typically 12V) on the circuit responsible for illuminating the 'Cold Start' (or Wait-to-Start) indicator lamp. The ECM pulls this circuit to ground to turn the lamp on; if it detects voltage when the circuit should be off or grounded, it logs a 'Short circuit to Battery' error.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running between the Engine ECM and the cab bulkhead/instrument cluster for obvious signs of chafing, melting, or rodent damage.

  2. Disconnect the ECM connectors (e.g., P1/P2 or J1/J2) and the instrument cluster connectors to inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals.

  3. With the ECM and instrument cluster disconnected, turn the key to the ON position and measure the voltage on the Cold Start Lamp signal wire (12V indicates a short to battery).

  4. Inspect the grid heater relay and its control wiring for internal shorts that might be back-feeding voltage into the lamp circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental electrical spikes.

  2. Isolate the Circuit

    Disconnect the main engine wiring harness from the Engine ECM and disconnect the harness at the cab instrument cluster.

  3. Trace the Short

    Using the machine's specific wiring schematic, trace the Cold Start Lamp wire. Pay special attention to pinch points, such as where the harness passes through the firewall/bulkhead, or near hot engine components.

  4. Repair the Wiring

    Once the shorted section of the wire is located, cut out the damaged portion. Solder a new section of wire of the same gauge and seal it with marine-grade, adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing. Wrap the repaired harness in protective loom.

  5. Test the Modules (If Wiring is Intact)

    If the wiring harness tests perfectly with no shorts, the short to battery may be internal to the instrument cluster or the ECM. Substitute a known-good cluster or ECM to verify.

  6. Reassembly and Clearing

    Reconnect all harness connectors and the battery. Turn the ignition on, connect a diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool), clear the inactive 3134 fault code, and verify that the Wait-to-Start lamp functions normally without the code returning.
