Case IH 3136 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Cold Start Lamp - Excessive Temperature
Issue description
Triggered when the control module detects an abnormal condition on the circuit responsible for illuminating the cold start indicator (often associated with the grid heater system). The "excessive temperature" designation typically indicates that the circuit is drawing too much current, experiencing high resistance, or that the bulb/LED component is overheating and operating outside of its normal electrical parameters.

Check the cause
Check for related cold start circuit codes, such as 3133 (No Load), 3134 (Short to Battery), or 3135 (Short to Ground) to isolate if the issue is a hard short or a resistance/temperature issue.
Visually inspect the instrument cluster and the cold start indicator lamp area for physical damage, melting, or signs of overheating.
Disconnect the ECM and the instrument cluster connector, then use a multimeter to check the cold start lamp circuit for high resistance, a partial short to ground, or damaged insulation.
If the machine uses a replaceable bulb, test the current draw of the bulb to see if it exceeds the ECM's maximum threshold (an incorrect wattage bulb can trigger this code).
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during testing.
Access the Indicator
Gain access to the rear of the instrument cluster or the specific cold start indicator lamp panel on the dashboard.
Inspect the Wiring
Trace the wiring harness connecting the ECM to the cold start lamp. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or corroded pins at the connectors. Repair or replace damaged wiring as necessary.
Inspect/Replace the Bulb
If the machine uses a replaceable incandescent bulb for the cold start indicator, remove and inspect it. An aging or incorrect bulb can draw excessive current and trigger the fault. Replace the bulb with the correct OEM wattage.
Cluster Verification
If the lamp is an integrated LED within a sealed instrument cluster and the wiring tests good, the cluster itself may have an internal fault causing the excessive temperature reading. In this case, the cluster may require professional repair or replacement.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault code. Cycle the key and initiate a cold start sequence to verify the code does not return.
