Case IH 3137 – Engine Controller (ECM / EDC): Engine Controller High Pressure Pump Metering Driver - Open Load
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an open circuit ("open load") in the electrical circuit that drives the high-pressure fuel pump's metering unit.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Check the electrical connector at the high-pressure pump metering unit for loose, corroded, or pushed-out pins.
Wiring Harness Continuity: Trace the wiring harness between the metering unit and the Engine ECM. Look for chafing, breaks, or disconnected inline connectors. Use a multimeter to verify continuity on both the power and ground/control wires.
Relay Check: Check Main Relay 1, which supplies power to the high-pressure pump fuel metering unit, to ensure it is functioning and properly seated.
Component Resistance Test: Disconnect the metering unit and measure the resistance across its solenoid pins. A healthy M-Prop valve typically reads between 2.4 to 3.15 ohms. An infinite reading (OL) confirms the solenoid is internally open and the unit must be replaced.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the exterior of the high-pressure fuel pump and the surrounding area. The common rail fuel system is highly sensitive to contamination; no dirt must enter the pump during this process.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty metering unit.
Removal
Remove the mounting fasteners (usually Torx or Allen screws) securing the metering unit to the high-pressure pump. Carefully twist and pull the metering unit out of the pump housing.
Lubrication
Lubricate the O-rings on the new metering unit with clean diesel fuel or clean engine oil to prevent tearing during installation.
Installation
Insert the new metering unit into the pump housing. Install and tighten the mounting screws to the OEM specified torque.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness to the new unit. Reconnect the battery.
Bleed the System
Bleed the fuel injection system to remove any air introduced during the repair (often required after opening the high-pressure pump circuit).
Clear Codes
Use a diagnostic service tool to clear fault code 3137 and test run the engine to verify the repair.
