Case IH 3141 – Engine Control Unit (ENG / ECU): Fuel Flow Set point Too Low

This code indicates that the engine is not receiving the requested volume or pressure of fuel. The system detects that the low-pressure fuel system is not supplying enough fuel to the high-pressure pump, or the metering unit reflux is too low. When this code is active, the tractor will typically derate engine power (often limiting it to 1500 RPM), puff black smoke intermittently, flutter, or lose RPMs under load.

   Check Fuel Filters & Water Separator: Inspect the primary and secondary fuel filters. The factory fuel/water separator on the left side of the engine is a known restriction point; temporarily bypassing it can help determine if it is the cause of the pressure drop.

   Inspect Fuel Lines and Fittings: Check all fuel supply lines for restrictions. Pay special attention to 90-degree elbow fittings, as they are notorious for getting plugged with plastic shavings/debris from the fuel tank.

   Test Low-Side Fuel Pressure: Verify the low-pressure fuel supply. A healthy low-side pressure on some of these systems should be around 90 psi.

   Inspect the Fuel Tank Breather: Check the tank vent/breather. A stuck roll-over vent valve can create a vacuum in the tank, restricting fuel flow.

   Inspect the Engine Wiring Harness: Carefully check the wiring harness on the left side of the engine. Chafing inside the protective conduit near the fuel pump control solenoid is a common issue that causes shorts and triggers this code.

   Check Injector and Pump Return Volume: Perform an injector leak test and measure the return volume from the injectors and the high-pressure pump to rule out excessive bypass.

   Clear Restrictions

   Drain the fuel tank and inspect for plastic filings or debris. Clean the tank and blow out all fuel supply lines, ensuring all 90-degree elbows are completely clear.

   Replace Filters

   Install new primary and secondary fuel filters, as well as a new fuel/water separator.

   Repair Wiring

   If chafing is found on the engine wiring harness near the fuel pump solenoid, repair the damaged wires and re-secure the conduit to prevent future rubbing.

   Replace the Lift Pump

   If the low-side fuel pressure remains inadequate after clearing lines and changing filters, replace the electric fuel lift pump.

   Replace the Metering Unit / Solenoid

   If supply pressure is verified as good but the code persists when the fuel gets hot, replace the high-pressure pump control solenoid (metering unit).

   Replace the High-Pressure Pump

   If the high-pressure fuel pump is 'hammering' loudly or returning too much fuel during the volume test, the pump itself has failed internally and must be replaced.
