3141

Case IH 3141 – Engine Controller (EDC / Engine ECU): Fuel System - High Pressure Pump Is Pumping More Fuel Than Expected

Issue description

The engine is detecting a discrepancy in the fuel volume flow through the metering unit compared to the calculated limit, or it is experiencing a low fuel supply pressure condition.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Puma Series (115-240)
  • Magnum Series (180-340)
  • Maxxum 125
  • Steiger 350
  • 580N
  • 580SN
  • SR220
  • SR250
  • SV250
  • SV300
  • TR320
  • TV380

Check the cause

  1. Inspect Fuel Filters and Water Separator: Check for high restriction or low pressure, specifically inspecting the canister-style water separator filter with the clear top for debris caught inside the built-in check valve.

  2. Check Low-Pressure Fuel Lines: Ensure the low-pressure fuel tubes are not restricted, specifically checking if the return line from the pump to the fuel tank is clogged.

  3. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring harness on the left side of the engine for wires chafing inside the protective sheath.

  4. Test the Fuel Pressure Sensor: Check the fuel pressure sensor for accuracy and verify it is reading correctly on the low and high sides.

  5. Test the Fuel Metering Unit: Check the metering unit circuit for electrical defects or sticking.

  6. Check for Leaking Injectors: Perform an injector cut-out test and an injector leak-off test to ensure the injectors are not bypassing excessive fuel back to the return.

Repair steps

  1. Clean/Replace Filters

Remove the entire water separator filter base, clean out any debris trapped in the check valve, and install new fuel filters.

  2. Repair Wiring

If chafing is found on the engine wiring harness, repair the damaged wires and re-secure the harness to prevent future rubbing.

  3. Clear Lines

Blow out or clear the low-pressure fuel return lines if a clog is identified.

  4. Replace Faulty Components

If the filters and wiring are good, replace the fuel pressure sensor, fuel metering unit (M-Prop/FCA), or leaking fuel injectors based on the results of your diagnostic tests.

  5. Clear Fault Codes

Connect a compatible diagnostic tool (such as Jaltest or CNH EST) to the machine's diagnostic port to clear code 3141 from the Engine ECU and run a test to confirm the repair.
