3141 (F-1240-31) - ECU

Case IH 3141 (F-1240-31) - ECU – Engine ECU: Fuel pump pressure has exceeded desired pressure limits / Fuel Flow Set point Too Low

Issue description

Indicates a low-pressure system issue or a fuel volume mismatch where the fuel supply pressure is too low to meet the engine's requested demand. It can also indicate that leakage is detected based on the fuel quantity balance, meaning the high-pressure pump is pumping more fuel than expected to compensate for a restriction or a leak in the system.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Magnum Series Tractors (235, 250, 340)
  • Steiger Series Tractors (350, 450, 540 Quadtrac)
  • Puma Series Tractors (165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX)
  • Axial-Flow Combines (240 Series)
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL) and Compact Track Loaders (CTL)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the water separator filter base (especially clear top canister styles) and built-in check valve for trapped debris causing high restriction.

  2. Check all low-pressure fuel supply lines for kinks, leaks, or blockages, paying special attention to 90-degree plumbing fittings for plastic shavings.

  3. Test fuel supply pressure by hooking up an inline pressure gauge before the high-pressure pump to verify if low-side supply pressure drops during operation.

  4. Perform a fuel return volume test from the injectors and the high-pressure pump to check for internal leakage (e.g., max injector return ~42 ml/min at high idle, max pump return 2.5 GPM on some models).

  5. Verify the wiring circuit for the fuel metering unit and check if the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) has been forced open or is stuck.

Repair steps

  1. Clean the Filter Base

Remove the fuel water separator filter. Pull the entire filter base assembly and thoroughly clean out any debris or 'glop' trapped inside the check valve.

  2. Replace Filters

Install a new fuel filter and water separator element.

  3. Clear Lines

If restriction is still present, blow out or clear the fuel supply lines from the tank to the pump.

  4. Address High-Pressure Pump / Injector Leaks

If the fuel supply pressure is verified as good but the engine still derates and logs 3141, evaluate your return volume test results. If the high-pressure pump is hammering or returning too much fuel, replace the high-pressure fuel pump. If the injectors are leaking excessively, replace the faulty injectors.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

Use a compatible diagnostic tool (such as Jaltest or the Case IH dealer service tool) to clear the fault codes from the ECU. Run a high-pressure system test to confirm the repair.
