Check the cause

  1. Verify Coolant Level: Ensure the cooling system is properly filled. Low coolant can prevent the sensor from being fully submerged, leading to inaccurate readings.

  2. Verify Actual Temperature: Use an infrared laser thermometer on the thermostat housing or upper radiator hose to check the actual physical temperature of the engine. Compare this to the temperature reading on the dash or diagnostic tool.

  3. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Check the wiring harness leading to the coolant temperature sensor for chafing, breaks, or corrosion. A high-resistance connection can cause the sensor to report a colder-than-actual temperature.

  4. Thermostat Check: If the actual engine temperature is confirmed to be running cold (especially under load), the engine thermostat is likely stuck open.

Repair steps

  1. Drain Coolant (Partial)

    If replacing the sensor or thermostat, drain a small amount of coolant from the radiator petcock to bring the fluid level below the sensor/thermostat housing to prevent spills.

  2. Address the Thermostat (If engine is physically cold)

    Remove the thermostat housing, extract the old thermostat(s), clean the mating surfaces, and install a new thermostat and gasket.

  3. Address the Sensor (If engine is warm but reading cold)

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the coolant temperature sensor. Unthread the old sensor from the engine block/housing.

  4. Install New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM coolant temperature sensor into the port. Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks securely into place.

  5. Refill and Bleed

    Refill the engine coolant to the proper level.

  6. Test Run

    Clear the 3149 fault code using a diagnostic tool. Start the tractor and run it under load until it reaches normal operating temperature to verify the code does not return.
