Case IH 3150 – Engine ECU: System/Amber Warning Lamp - Short circuit to Battery

Issue description

The control module has detected unexpected voltage on the circuit responsible for illuminating the amber system warning lamp. This condition is typically caused by the lamp's control wire chafing and making direct contact with a live power wire (12V/24V), or an internal short within the lamp socket or the control module itself.

Check the cause

  1. Remove and visually inspect the amber warning lamp assembly, bulb, socket, and immediate pigtail wiring for melting, corrosion, or internal bridging.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness routing from the cab down to the Engine ECU for pinch points, chafing against the chassis, or melted loom near hot engine components.

  3. With the key ON and the lamp disconnected, probe the control wire at the lamp socket with a multimeter. If it shows battery voltage, a short to battery is confirmed.

  4. Disconnect the battery and harness at the Engine ECU and warning lamp. Test for continuity between the lamp's control wire and any known battery power wires in the harness.

  5. Check the Engine ECU connector pins for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that might be bridging a power circuit to the warning lamp pin.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes or further damage during the repair.

  2. Isolate the Short

    Using the results from your continuity test, trace the wiring harness to locate the exact point of the short circuit. (Common failure points are where the harness passes through the cab firewall or bends around the engine block).

  3. Repair the Wiring

    Once the damaged section of the wire is found (where insulation has rubbed away), cut out the exposed/damaged copper.

  4. Splice and Seal

    Splice in a new section of automotive-grade wire of the same gauge. Use crimp-style butt connectors and seal the repair completely with dual-wall (adhesive-lined) heat shrink tubing to prevent moisture ingress.

  5. Protect the Harness

    Wrap the repaired section in protective split-loom tubing or high-temp harness tape. Secure the harness with zip ties away from the friction point that caused the original damage.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the Engine ECU, the warning lamp, and the battery. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Use a CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) or compatible diagnostic scanner to clear fault code 3150.

  7. Verify Operation

    Cycle the key and verify that the amber warning lamp illuminates correctly during the initial bulb-check phase and then turns off.
