3151

Case IH 3151 – Engine ECU (Engine Control Module): System/Amber Warning Lamp — Short circuit to Ground

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical circuit supplying power to the Amber Warning Lamp is shorted to ground (the chassis or a ground wire), preventing the lamp from functioning correctly and potentially drawing excessive current.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Farmall 115U

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leads running from the Engine ECU to the instrument cluster / Amber Warning Lamp for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or areas rubbing against the metal chassis.

  2. Disconnect the Amber Warning Lamp and use a digital multimeter to check the supply wire for continuity to ground. If continuity is present while unplugged, the short is in the wiring harness.

  3. Check the Amber Warning Lamp assembly itself. An internal failure in the bulb socket or LED board can cause a direct short to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical spikes or further damage during repair.

  2. Isolate the Short

Based on your diagnostic checks, locate the exact point of the short circuit.

  3. Repair the Wiring (If Applicable)

If the harness is chafed and shorting to the frame, cut out the damaged section of wire. Splice in a new section of wire using heat-shrink butt connectors to ensure a weather-tight seal. Wrap the repaired section in protective wire loom.

  4. Replace the Lamp (If Applicable)

If the wiring is intact but the lamp assembly is internally shorted, remove the mounting hardware for the Amber Warning Lamp, unplug the pigtail, and install a replacement lamp.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on, connect your diagnostic tool, and clear the active 3151 fault code.

  6. Verify Repair

Start the engine and verify that the Amber Warning Lamp functions normally during the bulb-check phase and that the fault code does not return.
