3157 - ECU

Case IH 3157 - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM): ECM Not Detected on CAN bus / Engine anti-tamper security check timeout

Issue description

The engine dataset registration information was not available from the engine to the network within the required time. The machine's main network has lost communication with the engine controller, or the security handshake between the modules has timed out.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Magnum 235-340 (Series 4)
  • Magnum MX210
  • Magnum MX230
  • Magnum MX255
  • Magnum MX285
  • Magnum 180
  • Puma 140
  • Puma 155
  • Puma 170
  • Puma 185
  • Puma 205
  • Puma 210
  • Puma 215
  • Puma 225
  • Puma 230
  • Steiger 500
  • Steiger 620

Check the cause

  1. Check for other CAN bus codes to determine if multiple modules are dropping offline, which indicates a central CAN network failure rather than the ECM itself.

  2. Inspect all power supplies and grounds to the engine controller at the main connector.

  3. Verify the battery voltage on the instrument cluster. Start the engine (if possible) and run it at 2000 rev/min to ensure the alternator is providing adequate voltage.

  4. Physically inspect the wiring harness for pulled, loose, or damaged wires, particularly under the belly of the tractor or near the ECM.

Repair steps

  1. Trace the CAN Network

If the CAN signal is lost, use a multimeter to find where the CAN signal drops on the network. Check the terminating resistors and the CAN High/CAN Low lines for continuity.

  2. Repair Wiring

If a fault is indicated during the power, ground, or CAN line checks, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  3. Re-register the Engine Dataset

If the wiring is intact but the dataset registration information was not available error persists, use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to re-register or update the engine dataset to clear the anti-tamper security timeout.

  4. Repair or Replace the ECM

If the harness has verified power, ground, and CAN continuity, but the ECM still fails to communicate, the ECM itself has suffered a hardware failure and must be refurbished or replaced.
