3158 - ECU

Case IH 3158 - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM): Invalid ECM Checksum

Issue description

A software calibration mismatch where the software dataset currently flashed to the engine controller does not match the registration information expected by the machine's CAN bus network or main vehicle controller. This is typically triggered after an ECM replacement, an official software update, or an unauthorized aftermarket flash.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Farmall series (e.g., 75C, 110C)
  • Case IH Magnum series (e.g., 235–340)
  • Case IH Steiger series
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Case IH Compact Track Loaders (CTL)

Check the cause

  1. Verify recent service history for ECM replacement, dealer software updates, or aftermarket tunes/emissions deletes.

  2. Check for accompanying CAN bus communication errors (e.g., Code 3157) that might indicate a wiring or communication failure rather than a software mismatch.

  3. Verify the correct ECM hardware is installed for the specific machine model, as incompatible hardware will reject dataset registration.

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop to the vehicle's CAN bus diagnostic port.

  2. Establish communication

Turn the machine's key to the ON position to establish communication with the ECM.

  3. Navigate EST software

Open the EST software and navigate to the Engine Download Tool and Programming menu.

  4. Select registration screen

Select the Engine Dataset Registration screen. This screen is specifically used to record changes made to the ECU during programming.

  5. Initiate registration

Click the "Start" button to initiate the Dataset Registration process.

  6. Register dataset

Follow the on-screen prompts to calculate and register the correct dataset to the machine.

  7. Clear codes and verify

Once the registration process is complete, clear the inactive fault codes and cycle the key to ensure Code 3158 does not return and the engine is out of derate/limp mode.
