Case IH 3158 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Engine controller configuration error anti-tamper

This is a security and anti-tamper feature. It triggers when the engine dataset (software calibration) currently installed on the engine controller does not match the dataset registered and expected by the machine's instrument cluster or main vehicle controller. This almost always occurs immediately after the ECM has been replaced, updated with new software, or modified via aftermarket tuning.

   Verify recent service history to determine if the ECM was recently replaced, flashed with a software update, or subjected to aftermarket chip-tuning

   Check for accompanying codes (e.g., 3157 CAN Engine Timeout). If 3157 and/or 3158 are the only active codes, it is strictly a configuration mismatch. If other CAN Data Link faults (e.g., 9151-9154) are present, there is a physical problem in the CAN wiring that must be repaired first

   Verify that all modules on the CAN bus have the latest, compatible software versions

   Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.

   Turn the key switch to the ON position to establish communication with the vehicle controllers.

   In the EST software, navigate to the "Configuration" menu.

   Select "Engine dataset registration".

   Click "Retrieve security check record history from vehicle controller".

   Do not simply press "Start" as it may return an error.

   Click "Write security check record to vehicle controller".

   This process registers the new engine dataset to the machine, satisfying the anti-tamper security check.

   Cycle the key switch, restart the machine, and verify the fault code has cleared.
