Case IH 3159 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC7: Invalid Engine Reference Torque
Issue description
This code indicates that the engine controller is broadcasting or receiving an invalid torque reference value over the CAN bus. This is almost always a software, configuration, or communication issue rather than a mechanical failure. It frequently occurs when the engine dataset installed does not match the dataset registered for the machine, or there is a software mismatch between the Engine ECU and the Transmission Controller.
Applies to these machines
13 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Magnum 190 CVT
- Magnum 235
- Magnum 260
- Magnum 290
- Magnum 315
- Magnum 340 (Series 4)
- Puma 165
- Puma 180
- Puma 195
- Puma 210
- Puma 225
Check the cause
Check for recent software changes: Determine if the Engine ECU or Transmission Controller (RE module) was recently replaced, swapped from another tractor, or flashed with new firmware.
Check for accompanying codes: Look for code 3158 (Invalid ECM Checksum), which explicitly states that the engine dataset installed does not match the dataset registered for the machine.
Verify CAN communication: Ensure there are no CAN bus communication errors between the Engine ECU and the Transmission Controller, as the transmission relies on engine torque data to operate.
Use CNH EST: Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to read the current software versions and dataset registrations on both the engine and transmission controllers.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the CNH EST to the tractor's diagnostic port.
Register the Dataset
If the engine dataset has just been updated or a module was swapped, use the EST to register the new dataset to the machine so the controllers recognize each other.
Match Firmware Versions
If registering the dataset does not clear the code, verify that the software versions on the Engine ECU and the Transmission Controller are compatible. If a module was swapped from a different model, the software will conflict and cause the engine to shut down after 30-45 seconds. Reflash the controllers with the correct, matching firmware for the specific tractor chassis.
Clear Codes
Once the correct dataset is registered and firmware is matched, clear the inactive fault codes from the EDC7.
Calibrate
Perform a full transmission and engine calibration procedure as prompted by the EST to relearn the reference torque values.
Parts you might need
(2)Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC7 Controller
OEM Part number varies heavily by specific engine serial and tractor model. Any replacement ECM must be blank-flashed and programmed with the exact dataset for your specific tractor's PIN/Serial Number using CNH EST, otherwise code 3159 will immediately return.
Transmission Controller / RE Module
OEM Part number varies by specific transmission type, e.g., CVT vs. Powershift. Any replacement Transmission Controller must be blank-flashed and programmed with the exact dataset for your specific tractor's PIN/Serial Number using CNH EST, otherwise code 3159 will immediately return.
