Case IH 3159 – Engine Controller: Invalid Engine Reference Torque

Issue description

The Vehicle Control Module (VCM) or the machine's display is either not receiving the expected operational data (such as torque reference messages) from the engine controller within the required timeframe, or the data being broadcast over the CAN bus is invalid/corrupted. This often results in intermittent engine faults, loss of throttle response, or the engine dropping to a default RPM (e.g., 1700 RPM) under load.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum Series (235, 250, 340 Series 4)
  • Case IH Puma Series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX / CVT)
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes (such as 3157: ECM Not Detected on CAN bus, 3158: Invalid ECM Checksum, or 3179/3180: Timeout of CAN Messages) which point to a broader network failure.

  2. Verify that the engine dataset installed matches the dataset registered for the machine.

  3. Check the CAN bus wiring harness (CAN High and CAN Low) between the Engine Controller and the VCM for continuity, chafing, shorts to ground, or shorts to battery.

  4. Inspect the Engine Controller harness connectors for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connectors

Disconnect the main harness at the Engine Controller. Clean any corrosion with electrical contact cleaner, ensure all pins are seated tightly, and apply dielectric grease.

  3. Repair Wiring

If the continuity test reveals high resistance or a short in the CAN lines, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  4. Test the System

Reconnect the harness, restore battery power, and clear the fault codes using the Electronic Service Tool (EST). Run the machine under load to see if the code returns.

  5. Replace the Engine Controller

If the wiring is verified as good, the software dataset is correct, and code 3159 returns (often due to an internal CAN transceiver failure or back-feed into the CAN bus), the Engine Controller must be removed and replaced.

  6. Reprogramming

Install the new Engine Controller and use the EST to flash/program it with the correct engine dataset for your specific tractor model.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Controller

OEM part numbers vary strictly by the specific machine model, engine serial number, and emissions tier. You must use the Case IH parts catalog with your machine's PIN/Serial Number to find the exact ECM.

  • CAN Bus Wiring Harness / Connector Repair Kit

Generic fitment based on the damaged connector.
