3160 (DTC 6733) - ECU

Case IH 3160 (DTC 6733) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU A-095): Fan clutch solenoid short circuit to battery failure

Issue description

The control module has detected that the voltage on the fan clutch solenoid circuit is higher than expected. This condition is typically caused by the solenoid's wiring harness chafing and shorting to a 12V battery power source, or an internal short circuit within the fan clutch solenoid itself.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7230, 8230, 9230)
  • Puma series
  • Magnum series (MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285)
  • Steiger series
  • Farmall series (40, 45, 50 with Cab and CVT)

Check the cause

  1. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify the active status of fault 3160 (DTC 6733).

  2. Visually inspect the relevant wire harnesses and connectors routing from ECU A-095 to the fan clutch solenoid. Look for damaged insulation, bent or dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires.

  3. Verify that all connectors are fully seated. Flex the wiring harness while monitoring a multimeter to check for intermittent shorts to battery voltage.

  4. Check the fan clutch solenoid for proper operation and internal resistance to rule out an internal short.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Disconnect the machine's battery power before servicing the electrical system.

  2. Repair Wiring

If a short circuit to the battery is found in the wiring harness during the multimeter continuity checks, repair the damaged wire or replace the affected harness section as required.

  3. Replace Solenoid

If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine but the short is isolated to the component itself, remove and replace the fan clutch solenoid (or the entire viscous fan clutch assembly, depending on the model's modularity).

  4. Software Check

If the wiring is repaired/replaced and the fault has not been resolved, connect the EST and check ECU A-095 for the appropriate software. Re-flash the ECU software if necessary.

  5. Clear and Test

Reconnect all components, use the EST to clear the fault code, and return the machine to service to verify the repair.
