Case IH 3160 – Engine Controller (ENG) / Engine ECU: Fan Actuator — Short circuit to Battery

This code indicates that the control circuit for the engine cooling fan actuator is receiving unexpected battery voltage (12V). This usually means a wire is chafed and touching a power source, or the actuator itself has failed internally and shorted.

   Trace the wiring harness from the Engine ECU to the fan actuator. Look for rubbed, chafed, or melted insulation where the control wire might be touching a 12V power wire or the battery positive circuit.

   Perform an unplug test: Disconnect the fan actuator harness. If the code changes to an 'Open Load' (Code 3162) and the fan defaults to full speed, the wiring is likely intact and the actuator itself is internally shorted.

   Perform a voltage test: With the key ON and the actuator unplugged, use a multimeter to probe the control wire terminal on the harness side. If it reads 12V when the ECU is not commanding the fan on, there is a short to battery in the wiring harness.

   Inspect the pins at the fan clutch and the ECU for corrosion, water intrusion, or bent pins bridging the connections.

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent further electrical damage or accidental shorts during repair.

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a chafed wire in the harness, splice and repair the damaged section using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors. Reroute the harness away from hot engine components or sharp brackets.

   If the short is internal to the fan clutch/actuator: Remove the serpentine belt/fan drive belt. Unbolt the fan blade assembly from the fan clutch hub. Reattach the fan blades and reinstall the drive belt.
