Case IH 3162 – Engine Controller (EDC): Fan Actuator - Open Load

The engine controller is attempting to send an electrical signal to the viscous cooling fan clutch actuator, but it detects no electrical load on the circuit. This is typically caused by a broken wire, a disconnected harness plug, or an internal open circuit (failed coil) within the viscous fan clutch assembly itself.

   Trace the wiring harness from the Engine Controller (EDC) to the viscous fan clutch actuator, looking for disconnected plugs, corroded pins, or broken wires.

   Use a multimeter to test the fan actuator circuit for continuity. If the harness tests good but the actuator side shows an open circuit, the fan clutch has failed internally.

   Check the physical fan blades for damage or imbalance, as a bent blade can destroy the bearings and internal components of a fan clutch.

   Perform a cold spin test to verify that the fan unit spins freely when the engine is cold.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken wire or damaged connector in the harness, repair the connection and clear the fault code.

   Replace the Viscous Fan Clutch

   If the wiring is intact and the actuator coil is internally open, the viscous fan clutch assembly must be replaced.

   Removal

   Remove the old fan clutch from the engine's front pulley system.

   Handling the New Part

   Never store or handle the new viscous fan clutch on its side or upside down. The precision-calibrated silicone fluid inside needs to stay properly positioned for correct thermal operation.

   Installation

   Mount the new clutch exactly like the original, ensuring the fan blades are transferred carefully (if not damaged) and torqued to spec. Reconnect the electrical actuator harness.

   Clear Codes

   Clear the 3162 fault code from the Engine Controller and run the tractor under load to ensure the fan engages properly as engine temperatures rise.
