Case IH 3163 – Engine Controller (ENG / Engine ECU): Fan Actuator - Temperature Too High

The engine's power phase hardware has detected that the electronic viscous fan drive (Vistronic Fan) is reporting an excessively high internal temperature, or it has detected a no-load/temperature excess condition lasting for more than 300 milliseconds.

   Inspect the wiring harness and the specific electrical connector (X219) going to the viscous fan drive.

   Check for shorts or open circuits by looking for damaged, chafed, or melted wires.

   Verify the fan speed sensor signals to ensure the ECU is not receiving erratic speed data.

   Physically inspect the cooling fan to ensure it is not jammed or blocked by debris, which could cause the viscous clutch to slip continuously and overheat.

   Prepare machine for repair

   Turn off the machine, disconnect the battery, and allow the engine and cooling system to completely cool down.

   Locate fan actuator

   Locate the electronic viscous fan drive (fan actuator) mounted on the front of the engine.

   Disconnect electrical connector

   Disconnect the electrical connector (e.g., X219) from the fan actuator.

   Remove fan blade assembly

   Unbolt and remove the fan blade assembly from the viscous fan drive clutch.

   Remove viscous fan drive

   Unbolt the faulty viscous fan drive from the engine water pump or mounting pulley and remove it from the machine.

   Install new fan drive

   Install the new viscous fan drive and reattach the fan blades to the new clutch.

   Reconnect electrical and battery

   Reconnect the electrical harness and reconnect the battery.

   Clear fault codes

   Connect a diagnostic tool to the machine to clear the Engine ECU fault codes.

   Verify repair

   Start the engine, bring it up to operating temperature, and verify that the fan engages properly and that fault code 3163 does not return.
