Case IH 3166 (F-4009-03) - ECU – Engine Controller (Engine ECU / EDC): Engine Controller Fuel Filter Heater Circuit - Short Circuit To Battery

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the circuit responsible for activating the fuel filter heater relay is receiving unintended battery voltage (12V). This usually means a wire in the harness has chafed and is touching a live power source, or the relay itself has failed and shorted internally.

   Locate the fuel filter heater relay (typically located in the main cab fuse/relay panel or directly adjacent to the fuel filter/water separator assembly)

   Inspect the relay pins and socket for signs of melting, burning, or severe corrosion

   Test the relay with a multimeter to check for an internal short across the relay's coil pins

   With the relay removed and the key in the ON position (engine off), use a multimeter to probe the ECU-to-relay control wire in the socket. If it shows 12V when the ECU is not commanding the heater to turn on, the wiring harness is shorted to battery voltage

   Visually inspect the wiring harness between the fuel filter assembly, the relay box, and the Engine ECU for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If a short was found in the harness during diagnostics, carefully open the wire loom at the damaged section. Cut out the exposed/shorted wire, solder in a new section of wire of the same gauge, and seal it with marine-grade heat shrink. Re-loom and secure the harness away from vibration points.

   Replace the Relay

   If the harness tests fine but the relay is internally shorted, discard the old relay and plug a new OEM relay into the socket.

   Reassemble

   Reconnect the negative battery cable.

   Clear Codes

   Turn the key to the ON position. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's onboard diagnostic display to clear the inactive 3166 fault code.

   Verify Repair

   Start the engine and let it run. Monitor the dashboard or EST to ensure the fault code does not return.
