Case IH 3167 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU / ECM): Engine Controller Fuel Filter Heater Circuit - Short Circuit To Ground

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the electrical circuit controlling the fuel filter heater (or its relay) has a short to ground. Voltage is finding an unintended path to the chassis or ground before reaching the load, which disables the fuel filter heater and can cause starting or running issues in cold weather.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • skid steer
  • Steiger T4B
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • Magnum Tractors
  • Steiger
  • Quadtrac

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine Controller to the fuel filter heater relay and the heater element for chafed, melted, or pinched wires touching the machine's frame.

  2. Remove the fuel filter heater relay and test it for an internal short to ground across its control coil pins.

  3. With the relay removed and the ECM disconnected, check the control wire for continuity to ground to verify if the wiring harness is shorted.

  4. Disconnect the fuel filter heater element and check its resistance to see if an internal short is pulling excessive current.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental electrical spikes.

  2. Locate Components

Locate the fuel filter heater relay (usually in the main fuse/relay distribution box) and the fuel filter heater assembly (mounted on or near the primary fuel filter housing).

  3. Isolate the Short

Disconnect the relay. Measure the resistance between the ECM control wire pin at the relay block and a known good chassis ground. If the multimeter reads a short (close to 0 ohms), trace the harness back to the ECM, open the loom, and repair the damaged wire.

  4. Test/Replace the Relay

If the wiring harness is intact, test the relay. If the relay coil is internally shorted, replace the relay.

  5. Test/Replace the Heater Element

If the relay and wiring are good, the short may be within the heater element itself. Replace the fuel filter heater assembly if it fails a resistance test.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect all harnesses, plug in the new relay/heater if applicable, and reconnect the battery.

  7. Clear Codes

Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 3167 fault code. Cycle the key and run the engine to verify the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Fuel Filter Heater Relay

Standard CNH micro-relay used in the power distribution center.

  • Fuel Filter Heater Element / Assembly

Mounts to the fuel filter housing.

  • Wiring Harness Repair Kit

Used if the short to ground is caused by a chafed wire in the loom.
