Case IH 3168 (DTC 51B5) - ECU – Engine ECU (A-095): Fuel filter heater actuator has an open load error

The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) monitors the fuel filter heater relay circuit for an open circuit condition. If the ECU detects an open circuit (a break in the electrical path or a disconnected load) in the relay's signal circuit, this fault is triggered.

   Verify that the tractor battery has not been connected to an external power supply (like a jump box or external charger), which can trigger this fault

   Check the fuel filter heater relay (K-024) circuit for an open circuit condition

   Inspect the wire harness between the ECU and the relay for faults, chafing, or disconnected pins

   Test the charging system and the fuel filter heater solenoid/relay for internal faults

   Disconnect External Power

   If an external power supply is currently connected to the machine, disconnect it immediately and test the system for normal operation to see if the code clears.

   Inspect Wiring

   Locate the Engine ECU (A-095) and the fuel filter heater relay (K-024). Visually inspect the wiring harness connecting them. Look for broken wires, corrosion at the connectors, or backed-out pins. Repair any damaged wiring.

   Test the Relay

   Remove the fuel filter heater relay (K-024). Test the relay for continuity and proper switching operation. If the relay has an internal open circuit, it must be replaced.

   Test the Actuator/Heater Element

   Check the resistance of the fuel filter heater element itself to ensure it has not burned out (which would also cause an open load).

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Once the faulty wiring is repaired or the relay/heater is replaced, reconnect all components, clear the ECU fault codes, and cycle the key to verify the repair.
