3168

Case IH 3168 – Engine Electronic Control Unit (ECU) / A-095: Fuel filter heater actuator has an open load error

Issue description

The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) monitors the fuel filter heater relay circuit (specifically identified as the K-024 circuit) for an open circuit condition. If the ECU detects an open circuit or a break in the K-024 signal circuit, it logs this fault.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • skid steer
  • Steiger T4B
  • Puma Series Tractors
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4) Tractors

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the machine battery power supply has not been connected to an external power supply (like a jump box or external charger). If connected, disconnect it and test for normal operation.

  2. Ensure the machine's charging system is not faulty and is providing the correct voltage.

  3. Visually inspect the wire harness leading to the fuel filter heater and the K-024 relay for chafing, disconnected lines, or corrosion.

  4. Test the K-024 fuel filter heater relay/solenoid for internal faults or an open coil.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect any external power supplies or chargers.

  2. Locate Components

Locate the fuel filter housing, the fuel filter heater actuator, and the K-024 fuel filter heater relay.

  3. Test the Circuit

Using a multimeter, test the K-024 signal circuit between the ECU (A-095) and the relay for continuity.

  4. Repair Wiring

If an open circuit is found in the harness (broken wire or corroded connector pin), repair or replace the affected section of the wiring harness.

  5. Test/Replace the Relay

If the wiring is intact, test the K-024 relay. If it fails to click or shows an open circuit across its control terminals, replace the relay.

  6. Test/Replace the Heater Actuator

If the relay and wiring are good, test the resistance of the fuel filter heater actuator element itself. If the element is burnt out (open load), replace the fuel filter heater kit.

  7. Clear Codes

Reconnect all components, turn the key on, clear the fault codes from the ECU, and run the engine to verify the code does not return.

Parts you might need
