Case IH 3169 – Engine Controller (ECM / EDC): Engine Controller Fuel Filter Heater Circuit - Signal Not Plausible

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is detecting a voltage or resistance signal from the fuel filter heater relay circuit that does not match the expected parameters when the heater is commanded on or off.

   Test the Fuel Filter Heater Relay for internal faults, ensuring it opens and closes properly when voltage is applied and isn't sticking.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine Controller and the fuel filter heater relay for rubbed wires, corrosion, or disconnected plugs.

   Check the ECM pins and the relay block pins for pushed-out terminals or moisture intrusion, specifically on the 'ECU to fuel filter heater return' and 'Fused B+ to ECU' circuits.

   Unplug the fuel filter heater element at the fuel filter housing and check it for proper resistance/continuity to ensure the element hasn't burned out.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Components

   Locate the fuel filter housing (usually on the side of the engine block) and the main engine relay fuse box.

   Repair Wiring

   If diagnostic checks revealed corroded connectors or damaged wires on the heater return circuit, repair the wiring harness using approved electrical splice kits and clean the grounds.

   Replace Faulty Components

   If the relay failed bench testing, replace the Fuel Filter Heater Relay. If the heater element on the filter housing has infinite resistance (open) or is shorted, replace the fuel filter heater element/kit.

   Reassembly & Clearing Codes

   Reconnect the wiring harnesses and the battery. Use a Case IH diagnostic service tool (or the machine's onboard diagnostic display) to clear the inactive 3169 fault code.

   Verification

   Cycle the key and run the engine to verify the code does not return.
