Case IH 3172 (F-110-16) – Engine Electronic Control Unit (ECU): Engine coolant temperature has exceeded the pre-warning threshold
Issue description
The system monitors the engine coolant temperature, and this specific pre-warning code is triggered when the coolant temperature exceeds 106.0 °C (222.7 °F). If the temperature continues to rise and exceeds 110.0 °C (229.9 °F), the system will escalate the warning and log fault code 3173.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Case IH Puma Series Tractors
- Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- Case IH Magnum and Steiger Tractors
- Case IH Farmall Tractors
- Case Construction equipment (e.g., 580 Super N backhoes)
Check the cause
Verify actual engine coolant temperature using a manual temperature gauge or an infrared thermometer to determine if the engine is genuinely overheating
Check engine coolant levels in the reservoir and radiator
Inspect the radiator, aftercooler, and front grilles for clogs, dirt, chaff, or debris that could be restricting airflow
Verify that the engine cooling fan is operating correctly
Inspect the wiring harness and connector for the coolant temperature sensor (Sensor B-016) for shorts, corrosion, or breaks
Repair steps
Safely Shut Down
If the code is active, safely shut down the engine immediately to prevent catastrophic engine damage.
Cool Down
Allow the machine to cool down completely before opening the cooling system or handling engine components.
Clear Blockages
Thoroughly blow out the radiator and cooling packages with compressed air to remove any blockages.
Top Up Fluids
If the coolant level is low, inspect the system for leaks (hoses, water pump, radiator core) and top up the coolant to the specified level.
Test/Replace Sensor
If the physical temperature is normal but the ECU still reads above 106.0 °C, the coolant temperature sensor is likely defective. Disconnect the sensor, unthread it from the engine block/thermostat housing, and install a replacement OEM sensor.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the wiring harness, clear the fault codes using your diagnostic tool, and run the machine under load to ensure the temperature remains in the normal operating range and the code does not return.
