Case IH 3176 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Fuel System - High Pressure Pump Flow Setting Is Higher Than Expected To Maintain Normal Rail Pressure At Zero Fueling

Issue description

The set point of the fuel metering unit (MPROP) is not plausible during an overrun condition (when the engine is decelerating and fueling should be at zero). The engine control system detects that the high-pressure pump is flowing more fuel than it should be to maintain the target common rail pressure.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the primary and secondary fuel filters/water separators for severe clogs, restriction, or water contamination, which can cause erratic pressure readings.

  2. Verify the Metering Unit Set Point: Use a diagnostic scanner to monitor the fuel metering unit's set point and the actual rail pressure during an overrun (deceleration) state.

  3. Check Electrical Connections: Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the fuel metering unit (located at the inlet of the high-pressure pump). If the electrical connection is lost, the system loses the ability to regulate pressure, forcing the valve open.

  4. Test the Rail Pressure Sensor: Verify that the rail pressure sensor is not outputting a falsely low reading, which would cause the ECU to command a higher pump flow.

Repair steps

  1. Replace Fuel Filters

    If the fuel filters are near their service interval or show signs of restriction, replace them and bleed the fuel system. Clear the code and test run the machine.

  2. Inspect/Replace the Fuel Metering Unit (Pressure Regulator)

    If the filters are clean and the wiring is intact, the fuel metering unit is likely mechanically stuck or failing. Remove the metering unit from the high-pressure fuel pump.

  3. Check the Pressure Relief Valve

    Ensure the mechanical rail pressure relief valve is not stuck closed.

  4. Install New Components

    Install the new metering unit or pressure regulator.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

    Use a CNH/Caterpillar-compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the EDC fault codes. Run the engine through a full load and overrun cycle to ensure rail pressure remains within the expected parameters and the code does not return.
