3176 (DTC 3B65) - ECU

Case IH 3176 (DTC 3B65) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): High pressure pump fuel delivery quantity in over run exceeds a maximum threshold

Issue description

The high-pressure fuel pump is delivering more fuel than the Engine Control Unit expects during an overrun condition (decelerating or coasting). The system detects that the fuel metering unit is not restricting the fuel flow adequately, leading to a mismatch between the commanded fuel setpoint and actual delivery.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • Case IH Magnum 235 – 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger Tractors
  • Case IH Puma and Farmall Series

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes (e.g., 3113, 3114, 3293, 3805, or 3112) indicating electrical or sensor faults, and troubleshoot those first

  2. Check if an external power supply (like a jump starter or external charger) has been connected to the tractor battery, as voltage irregularities can trigger this code

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the ECU and the fuel metering unit on the high-pressure pump for loose contacts, corrosion, or wire chafing

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect External Power

Ensure no external power supplies are connected to the machine's battery.

  2. Inspect Electrical Connections

Disconnect the harness at the fuel metering unit (suction control valve) located on the high-pressure fuel pump. Clean the contacts and ensure the connector seats firmly.

  3. Test the Harness

Use a multimeter to test the wiring harness between the fuel metering unit and the ECU for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to battery voltage.

  4. Replace the Fuel Metering Unit

If the wiring is intact and no other rail pressure sensor faults are active, the mechanical valve inside the fuel metering unit is likely sticking open during overrun. Remove and replace the fuel metering unit (MProp/ZME) on the high-pressure pump.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes. Run the engine and perform a deceleration test to ensure the code does not return and that fuel rail pressure tracks the commanded setpoint accurately.
