Case IH 3177 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) A-095: Engine over speed condition detected

Issue description

The ECU monitors engine speed to protect the engine from over-revving. This fault is triggered when the ECU detects that the engine speed has exceeded the maximum safe threshold (specifically, exceeding 2600 RPM).

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Puma
  • Magnum (235–340 Series 4)
  • Steiger (350–600)
  • Farmall
  • Maxxum
  • Optum
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active faults on the display

  2. Verify that the tractor's battery power supply has not been connected to an external power supply (like a jump starter or external generator)

  3. Determine if the fault was activated by an operational state, such as driving downhill with a heavy load

  4. Monitor fault status to see if it clears after returning to normal operating conditions

Repair steps

  1. Clear and Test

If the overspeed was caused by operator error (e.g., downhill travel), clear the DTC and test-drive the machine under normal load to ensure the code does not return.

  2. Inspect the Engine Speed Sensor

If the machine was not operating downhill and the code remains active or triggers at idle, inspect the Engine Speed Sensor and its wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or short circuits that could send erratic RPM spikes to the ECU.

  3. Check the ECU (A-095)

If the sensor and wiring are intact, a certified technician should use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for software updates, perform a software reset, or determine if the ECU needs replacement.
